What Is Active Release Therapy (ART)?

Posted on December 27th, 2017

London Wellness Group

Today, Dr. Brad Abell of the London Ontario chiropractic and injury centre The London Wellness Group, talks about Active Release Therapy.

This is a technique in which Dr. Brad has been extensively trained which can help athletes with damaged tissues recover.

To find out more, keep reading...

When you exercise, you put yourself at risk of injury.

This is as true for full contact sports like football or martial arts as it is for the most peaceful, benign sports like running or golf.

The injuries may be more traumatic in one than the other, but the risk is still there.

Because our bodies have so many different moving parts, there’s a lot that can go wrong.

This can lead to a variety of different repetitive strain injuries.

Some of the most common repetitive strain injuries include:

• Shin splints

• Plantar fasciitis

• Carpal tunnel symdrome

• Tennis elbow

• Sciatica

• Bursitis

• Shoulder strains

• Back pain

• Tension headaches.

If you’re experiencing any of the above injuries, you may be able to benefit from treatment with Active Release Therapy.

What is Active Release Therapy?

Active Release Therapy, or ART, is a treatment system designed by P. Michael Leahy, an American chiropractor and triathlete.

He developed this technique because he found traditional chiropractic wasn’t serving his patients as well as he’d like.

The goal of Active Release Therapy is to restore the mobility of your tissues which have been limited as a result of scar tissue formation, tears, strains, pulls, inflammation, and other problems as a result of overused muscles.

Each of the conditions listed above all have that in common – repetitive strain as a result of overused muscles.

These injuries are commonly considered sports injuries, but this isn’t the only cause.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, for example, is most closely associated with people who spend most of their time working on a computer.

Back pain and tension headaches can also be a result of a sedentary office life.

Regardless of the cause, though, Active Release Therapy is quite effective at dealing with these injuries.

What You Can Expect From Active Release Therapy Treatment

Here at The London Wellness Group, our in-house chiropractor Dr. Brad Abell is full-body certified in Active Release Therapy.

So you can expect to work with him, first off.

During an Active Release Therapy session, Dr. Brad will perform a combination of treatment and examination.

Because ART is not a one-size-fits-all approach, it requires a specific understanding of your body’s makeup and limitations.

He’ll examine your problem points to figure out your current limitations based on measuring the range of movement, tightness, and overall texture of your muscles, fascia, nerves, ligaments, and tendons.

Based on this analysis, Dr. Brad will ask you to make specific, guided movements as he applies tension to certain areas.

Are you struggling with one of the conditions listed above?

If so, Active Release Therapy may be able to help you.

What is a Microdermabrasion?

Posted on December 21st, 2017

London Wellness Group

The London Wellness Group, a London Ontario medical aesthetics spa offers the latest procedures to combat the onset of aging.

One of these procedures is the microdermabrasion.

If you have no idea what that means, you're not alone.

A lot of people are unfamiliar with the microdermabrasion treatment and how it can help you look your best.

That's where this article comes in.

How Microdermabrasion Works

Some microdermabrasion treatments are, essentially, sandblasting.

However, here at The London Wellness Group, we use a more advanced method.

Using the higher end SilkPeel DermalInfusion device, The London Wellness Group is able to provide the best microdermabrasions in the city.

This means our microdermabrasions are useful for:

• More volumized skin

• Reduced fine lines and wrinkles

• Increased radiance

• Lymphatic drainage

• Detoxifying skin

• Sun damage

• Stretch marks

• Back acne

• Cellulite on thighs

• Extreme dryness or cracking of hands and feet

• Dry skin or discoloration on arms and elbows.

For more on how the DermalInfusion microdermabrasion works, watch the video below:

Do Microdermabrasion Treatments Hurt?

At this point you may be asking yourself whether or not this process will hurt.

Actually, no. A microdermabrasion is virtually pain free.

Most people don't feel anything during the procedure, although some people have reported feeling a mild scratching.

If you're one of the few that does feel an unpleasant sensation, the technician can reduce the intensity of the treatment until you feel nothing.

In the day or two after the procedure, you might feel some mild redness or soreness, but it's a natural reaction to the process.

Just keep away from any excessive heat, including the sun, tanning beds, hot showers and saunas until at least one full day has passed.

Benefits Of Microdermabrasion?

As mentioned above, a microdermabrasion treatment gets rid of the dead outer skin cells to reveal youthful, radiant skin underneath.

This can make you look years younger.

A microdermabrasion can also help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and even scars.

These are more pronounced in the outer layers of the skin, and as a result your skin looks clearer and unworn almost immediately after the treatment has taken place.

The microdermabrasion treatment also helps your skin produce more collagen—a very important substance to produce as you get older.

Acne sufferers may also see some improvements after the treatment.

Microdermabrasion can clean out your pores, getting rid of blackheads and whiteheads.

People with oily skin might also get some relief.

Microdermabrasion may also help sufferers of blemishes, sunspots or hyper-pigmentation.

If you do decide to try microdermabrasion to treat acne, though, make sure to talk with a skin care professional beforehand.

They will let you know if microdermabrasion is a good option for you.

Contact London Wellness Group

If you'd like to learn more about microdermabrasion and whether or not the procedure is right for you, contact London Wellness Group.

You can sit down with one of our skincare professionals and talk about what you'd like to accomplish.

They will help you understand whether a microdermabrasion or some other treatment is best for you.

They will also walk you through the procedure and go over what you can expect before, during and after the microdermabrasion.

Best Facial Injection Clinic In London Ontario: What Are Your Options?

Posted on December 14th, 2017

London Wellness Group

For those of us who are starting to show the signs of aging we’d like to reduce, there are options.

If you’re after a solution to help you retain your youthful looks, The London Wellness Group can help.

We strive to provide the best facial injection clinic services in London Ontario, so we have several options for you to choose from.

Read on below to find out more.

Botox

Botox is one of the most recognized names in cosmetic injectables.

Part of this is its age – Botox has been around since 1989.

It works by injecting a controlled amount of neurotoxin into the muscles in your face.

This reduces their movement, which can control fine lines and wrinkles.

Most Botox patients report looking noticeably younger, with their signs of aging significantly reduced.

There are some side effects of Botox, but they’re generally rare, mild, and temporary.

Our medical aesthetician, Dr. Chris, will discuss these side effects with you prior to treatment.

Once you’ve received your Botox treatment, it generally takes about a week to see the full effect, though you may notice a difference sooner.

It will last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.

Xeomin

Xeomin is one of the most popular Botox alternatives on the market.

It’s derived from a similar substance, but there are some key differences.

This means the results you may see from using Xeomin may be different than Botox.

One of the key differences is that Xeomin has fewer additives.

As a result, you’re less likely to develop antibodies against it, which makes repeated treatments more effective.

Xeomin was developed by the Merz company of dermal injectables, one of the most trusted names in the industry.

Juvederm

Botox and Xeomin are similar products offered for similar reasons.

But Juvederm is something different altogether.

Whereas Botox and Xeomin work by injecting a foreign substance into your body to paralyze the muscles in that area, Juvederm is made up only of naturally occurring substances in your body.

The active ingredient is hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar found in your skin, so the risk of allergic reaction is far less than with Botox or Xeomin.

It works by filling out areas where you’re experiencing wrinkles or fine lines, combining with the natural moisture in your skin.

Juvederm treatments generally last longer than Botox and Xeomin.

Depending on the area treated, it can last up to two years. The effects also show up much sooner.

You can generally see the results by the time you walk out of the clinic.

Belotero

Belotero is to Juvederm what Xeomin is to Botox.

Some call it a “starter” filler, since it’s lighter and the results are sometimes milder.

But in many ways, it’s similar to Juvederm.

So when do we use Juvederm vs. Belotero?

It depends on your skin type, individual needs, and bodily chemistry.

If you speak with Dr. Chris about injectable treatments, he’ll determine which of the two will work best for you.

Botox vs. Juvederm vs. Xeomin vs. Belotero

Which of the above will best suit your needs?

With at least four different options to choose from, how can you tell which one to go with?

Simple.

Contact The London Wellness Group today to book your FREE aesthetic consultation with our resident medical aesthetician, Dr. Chris.

He’ll answer any questions you have, examine your skin type, and help you decide how to best deal with your aesthetic concerns.

What Is Electrotherapy? (It’s Not As Scary As It Sounds!)

Posted on December 12th, 2017

London Wellness Group

We chiropractors often have a reputation for just being bone-crackers; for wrenching bodies around this way and that in order to bring things back into alignment.

And while cracking spinal manipulation does have something to do with it, it’s by no means the only aspect of chiropractic.

Now, all chiropractors are different, of course.

Each of us receives the same training in chiropractic college, but after that it’s up to us to grow our knowledge.

As the owner of a London Ontario chiropractic clinic, I’ve had the privilege of working with many different patients over the years, and this has given me unique insight into what works and what doesn’t.

One of the modalities I’ve incorporated into my practice is called electrotherapy.

And yes, I know it sounds terrifying.

You may be thinking of some sort of torture device that was best left back in the early 20th century.

This is often the reaction when I first mention electrotherapy. They really should have given it a different name.

But whatever you’re imagining right now, don’t worry. It’s a lot gentler than that.

In fact, many people find electrotherapy to be peaceful and relaxing.

Electrotherapy is a mode of treatment using electrical currents which flow through your muscles and stimulate them.

This helps to reduce pain, improve your circulation, strengthen your muscles and bones, and generally improve your overall physical condition.

How Does Electrotherapy Work?

If you’re receiving an electrotherapy treatment, here’s what you can expect.

I’ll take two electrode pads and attach them onto your skin.

They’re sticky, so they’ll stay in place, but not so sticky that you’ll end up with a permanent new pal. Think of it like a Post-It note for your skin.

Anyway, you’ll feel a mild electric current across your skin.

Most people describe it as very gentle, a tingling sensation similar to when your foot is asleep without the uncomfortable bits.

This can help relieve pain, but the way it does so is still not fully understood.

One of the leading theories is that it’s because the electrical stimulation blocks any pain signals from that area to your brain. But it does promote the creation and release of endorphins within your body, which are your body’s natural painkillers.

Electrotherapy Side Effects

Overall, electrotherapy is considered very safe.

But like most treatments, there are sometimes some side effects.

The most common one is a mild skin irritation or rash, which is more a result of the adhesive in the electrodes rather than the actual electrical treatment.

Overuse can sometimes cause a burning sensation as well, which is no problem when you’re receiving treatment from a qualified practitioner.

We also make sure to avoid stimulation over infections or wounds, since it can make them worse.

Pregnant women and people with pacemakers are also generally bad candidates for electrotherapy, but we determine things on a case-by-case basis.

What Does Electrotherapy Treat?

If you’re suffering from any of the following, you may benefit from electrotherapy:

• Chronic fatigue

• Chronic pain

• Nerve pain, especially caused by diabetes

• Fibromyalgia

• Headaches, especially migraines

• Weak or underdeveloped bones

• Anxiety

• Depression

Is Electrotherapy Right For Me?

Here at The London Wellness Group, we don’t suggest electrotherapy to everyone.

Some people find it helpful, while others don’t.

To find out if electrotherapy is right for you, contact The London Wellness Group to book your FREE wellness solution session.

You’ll get a chance to sit down and talk with one of our licensed and qualified health practitioners, get your questions answered, and find out how you can best deal with your health concerns.

Common Questions About Botox Treatments

Posted on December 8th, 2017

London Wellness Group

One of the most popular medi spa anti-aging treatments in the world is Botox – in fact, it’s the single most popular beauty treatment in the US.

Since this anti-aging solution is so popular, you’re bound to come across it once you start thinking about how to fight the signs of aging.

So we’ve put together this quick FAQ to help you understand the benefits of botox, the potential risks, and whether it’s the best option for you.

What are the ingredients in Botox?

Botox is a dermal injectable with three simple ingredients.

First, human albumin, an element naturally found in your blood.

Next, sodium chloride, or simple salt.

Finally, the active ingredient – a tiny amount of botulinum toxin extracted and purified from clostridium botulinum, a bacterial strain.

Large doses of botulinum toxin is toxic, but in tiny amounts it can be used therapeutically.

What is Botox used for?

Botox can be used for several different purposes.

Its most famous role is aesthetically – Botox can be used to fight the signs of aging, including wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet around the eyes, mouth, cheeks, and forehead.

But Botox can also be used to treat migraines, muscular issues, and even certain gastrointestinal issues.

To find out more about how you could use Botox for these issues, contact your family doctor – The London Wellness Group does not use Botox for these purposes.

How does Botox work?

Your face expresses the various emotions you feel on a daily basis.

This includes smiling, laughing, frowning, furrowing, squinting, crying, yawning and that awkward face you make just before you sneeze.

Whatever you do with your face, though, will add to its overall wear and tear.

Over the years, this will start to trigger those signs of aging we all strive to fight.

When you inject Botox into these muscles, you temporarily reduce their activity.

This smoothes out your skin’s imperfections, reducing wrinkles, laugh lines, crow’s feet, etc.

Is Botox safe?

There are hundreds of peer reviewed scientific articles on the safety and effectiveness of Botox, as well as millions of clinical trials.

Botox is not without its risks, but overall it has been proven incredibly safe.

What are Botox side effects?

The most common side effect of Botox is a drooping or swelling eyelid.

Other side effects may include dry, itchy eyes, a headache, dry mouth, neck pain, tiredness, or discomfort at the point of injection.

These side effects are generally mild, temporary, and fairly rare though. Most Botox patients report little to no discomfort.

This list is not exhaustive, and doesn’t take into consideration your unique skin care history and needs.

For more information about the risks of Botox, book a consultation with one of our

What should I expect with a Botox treatment?

The treatment itself is pretty quick – depending on your individual needs, it will take about ten minutes.

Most people report only very mild pain, about the same as a rubber band snapping lightly on the skin.

The recovery time is short, too – you can walk right out of our facility after getting Botox treatment and resume your day normally.

Depending on your skin type and goals, we'll give you specific aftercare instructions.

Is Botox the only dermal injectable?

Botox is a specific type of dermal injectable – a neuromodular injectable. As far as these injectables go, Xeomin is another example.

There is also another type of dermal injectable though, called a dermal filler.

The most popular example of this is Juvederm, though Belotero is another example.

Is Botox right for me?

Here at The London Wellness Group, we offer each of the dermal injectable options listed above.

To find out which is best for you, book a FREE consultation with one of our qualified practitioners.

We'll examine your skin’s unique needs and listen to your specific skincare goals.

From there, you’ll get a chance to ask any questions, and then we'll put together a treatment plan designed to meet your needs.

Contact The London Wellness Group to find out whether Botox treatments can help you meet your aesthetic needs.

What Is Naturopathic Medicine?

Posted on December 6th, 2017

London Wellness Group

Here at The London Wellness Group, one of the primary services we offer is that of a naturopathic clinic.

It’s a different type of medicine when compared with traditional western medicine, practiced by different people – naturopathic doctors, instead of medical doctors.

If you’ve never experienced naturopathic medicine before, you may have some questions about it.

Read on to find out more information about the topic below.

You can also feel free to contact us and book a FREE wellness solution session where you can get all your questions about naturopathic medicine answered.

What Is A Naturopathic Doctor?

A naturopathic doctor is someone who has completed the necessary schooling and is licensed by their local board.

In Ontario, naturopathic doctors are licensed by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario.

What’s the difference between a medical doctor vs. naturopathic doctor?

Doctors, both medical and naturopathic, have spent a great deal of time in school to perfect their craft and understanding of their respective fields of medicine.

But whereas a medical doctor attends medical school, a naturopathic doctor attends naturopathic school.

The main difference here is in the approach to medicine.

Medical doctors often rely on pharmaceuticals and invasive treatments, often in reaction to health problems.

Naturopathic doctors, on the other hand, rely on a more holistic approach.

This means addressing all aspects of your health, including diet, lifestyle, mental and emotional health, environment, and more, in order to give you a treatment plan uniquely tailored to your needs.

And because naturopathic doctors look at all angles, it’s generally a more proactive approach to health.

Can I see a naturopathic doctor and a medical doctor?

Yes, of course.

Certain aspects of health are outside of a naturopathic doctor’s specialty, including surgery and physical trauma.

For other aspects of health, most naturopathic doctors are open to working alongside your family doctor to provide you with the highest quality care.

If you are actively seeing a medical doctor, it’s important to let your naturopathic doctor know what sort of treatment you’re receiving so they can tailor your approach to work most effectively.

What sort of treatments do naturopathic doctors use?

The answer to this depends on the naturopathic doctor you’re working with and your specific health concerns.

But homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), acupuncture, botanical medicine, nutritional and lifestyle counselling, and laboratory analysis are some of the most common tools in a naturopathic doctor’s tool belt.

Is naturopathic medicine based on science?

Naturopathic doctors detect illnesses and other health issues in the same way medical doctors do – through rigorous tissue analysis in the laboratory.

They may look at your blood, urine, stool, saliva, and/or hair.

There has also been a large amount of peer-reviewed research on the effectiveness of naturopathic treatments.

So yes, naturopathic medicine is scientific.

What’s the difference between a naturopath and a naturopathic doctor?

A naturopathic doctor has been to naturopathic school, and has received the necessary credentials and licensing to advertise themselves as such.

A naturopath, on the other hand, has had some other sort of training (or none at all), and is not necessarily qualified to act as a doctor.

Some naturopathic doctors may call themselves naturopaths, but others may not.

Only those with the proper credentials and licensing may call themselves naturopathic doctors, while anybody can call themselves a naturopath.

As a result, the quality of care you receive from naturopaths is inconsistent and unpredictable.

Here at The London Wellness Group, we employ only naturopathic doctors.

What types of illnesses can naturopathic doctors help with?

Naturopathic doctors focus on helping you achieve an optimum level of health, creating an environment where it’s difficult for illness to thrive.

This means naturopathic doctors can help with most illnesses.

Here at The London Wellness Group, our resident ND, Dr. Negin, specializes in pregnancy & paediatrics, anxiety, depression, gynaecological concerns, autoimmune disorders, and digestive issues.

Are naturopathic doctors covered by OHIP?

Unfortunately not. Most extended health benefits, though, offer full or partial coverage for treatments from naturopathic doctors.

For more information, speak to your employer, human resources manager, or insurance broker.

Questions about naturopathic medicine?

To find out more about whether naturopathic medicine can help you solve your health concerns, contact The London Wellness Group for a FREE wellness solution session.

You’ll get a chance to sit down with a naturopathic doctor and get all your questions answered.

From there, we can help you understand more about your options, and whether naturopathic medicine is for you.

Your Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic, Answered

Posted on November 30th, 2017

London Wellness Group

Chiropractic is one of the most popular forms of medicine in Canada, with about 4.5 million Canadians each year seeking chiropractic care.

And yet, there are a lot of questions from the general public about chiropractic, how it works, and what to expect.

And so we put together this handy guide to help you better understand.

Note that this isn’t a substitute for consulting with a real London Ontario chiropractor, nor is it medical advice.

This is just for informational purposes.

For a better idea about how chiropractic can help you, contact The London Wellness Group to book your FREE wellness solution session.

What is a chiropractor? And what is chiropractic medicine?

A chiropractor is someone who has completed the necessary schooling in chiropractic medicine, and who has been licensed to practice.

In Ontario, chiropractors are licensed by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario.

Chiropractic medicine is a specific discipline of medicine which focuses on treating musculoskeletal problems.

To a large degree, this includes relieving pain, but you don’t have to be in pain to benefit from chiropractic medicine.

Why should I see a chiropractor?

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms below, chiropractic medicine can help:

• Lower back pain

• Upper back pain

• Neck pain

• Hedaches

• Insomnia

• Anxiety

• Depression

• Difficulty focusing

• Disk herniations

• Sports injuries

• Plantar fasciitis

• Jaw tension

• Sciatica

• Scoliosis

• Muscle strains

A chiropractor can also help you prevent injuries or pain before they occur.

To find out more, contact The London Wellness Group to book a FREE wellness solution session with our on-staff chiropractor, Dr. Brad.

Where did chiropractic come from?

Chiropractic was developed by DD Palmer, a Canadian born in Pickering just east of Toronto.

His theory is based on the idea that musculoskeletal misalignment is the cause behind many diseases, and that most of the issues were in the spinal column.

He established the first chiropractic college, the Palmer School of Chiropractic, in 1897 in Davenport, Iowa, which still exists today.

Is chiropractic safe?

Because chiropractors don’t use drugs or surgery at all in their practice, there is zero risk of any adverse effects from that angle.

In general, chiropractic treatment is considered safe when administered by a licensed and qualified practitioner.

You may experience minimal discomfort in the area treated, which can show up in the form of headaches, fatigue, or general discomfort.

This is completely normal.

Although rare, there can be certain side effects, including a worsening of an existing disk herniation, nerve compression, and in rare cases, a vertebral artery dissection (a type of stroke) after a neck manipulation.

Also, if you have severe osteoporosis, cancer in your spine, numbness or tingling in your extremities, or are at risk of stroke, you may not want to pursue chiropractic care.

Your chiropractor will help you understand the risks and benefits before beginning your treatment.

Is chiropractic effective in treating sports injuries?

Yes, absolutely. As part of their education, chiropractors are trained to diagnose and assess sports injuries.

Dr. Brad himself is highly educated in this field.

He holds a master’s degree in kinesiology, the study of the mechanics of how the body moves.

He also has experience with sports medicine in several fields of athletics, including rowers and hockey players.

If you’ve experienced a sports injury, Dr. Brad can help you determine the cause of your pain and help you manage it, as well as help you mitigate the effects of your injury.

And if you’re an athlete who hasn’t yet experienced an injury, Dr. Brad can help you keep it that way.

What can I expect during my first visit?

When you first visit The London Wellness Group, Dr. Brad will take the time to get to know your health history, with a specific focus on any spinal issues you’ve experienced.

We may recommend x-rays in order to get a better idea of things.

During the actual adjustment, Dr. Brad will position your body in specific ways in order to adjust you and repair the subluxations in your body.

This may involve lying on your front, side, or back, or sitting upright.

You may experience minor discomfort, and hear popping or cracking sounds. This is normal.

If you experience any discomfort that becomes intolerable, let Dr. Brad know.

The idea is to make you feel better, not worse!

Is chiropractic covered by OHIP?

Not currently, no. However, chiropractic care is covered by just about every private health insurance provider out there.

Consult with your individual plan to find out more about whether chiropractic is covered for you, and how much.

Do you have a question that wasn’t answered above?

Or are you considering chiropractic care but don’t know where to start?

How Long do Chiropractic Adjustments Last?

Posted on November 29th, 2017

When you go to a chiropractor, you might not know what to expect. What are "chiropractic adjustments?" How many of them does a patient usually need? Are they permanent fixes or will I have to keep getting them again and again? These are all very good questions. Read on to find the answers.

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

In the world of chiropractic, an adjustment is just that-an adjustment a chiropractor makes to vertebrae of the spine. These vertebrae are in suboptimal positions along the spine, and the result is that the muscles can feel in pain, stiff, or just uncomfortable. A chiropractor will push, shove and essentially force the wayward vertebra back into place. These adjustments have also been recognized as being effective by the mainstream medical establishment.

How many adjustments do you need?

The short answer is “it depends." When you go to see a chiropractor, he or she will ask you a lot of questions about your pain or discomfort. They'll want to know whether this is a new injury or one you've had for a while and whether the injury is chronic or not. You can also expect your chiropractor to look at your overall health and examine your health history for any diseases which can cause complications in the treatment, like diabetes or scoliosis. Finally, the number of adjustments you need will depend on the technique the chiropractor uses. They might just treat the symptoms to help alleviate the pain so you can heal on your own, which most patients prefer. However, they might want to do a corrective set of adjustments, which can take longer. After all these factors have been evaluated, your chiropractor will tell you how many adjustments you need. While even providing a range is impossible, it's safe to say that curing minor discomfort and one-time injuries will require fewer adjustments than treating chronic pain or severe muscle injuries.

How long do the adjustments last?

Unfortunately, the answer is still "it depends." How long adjustments last depends on all the factors listed previously. However, you also need to take into consideration how closely a patient follows the treatment plan and how often they do the stretches and exercises their chiropractor recommends. Chiropractic adjustments may also not last as long for people who have a heavy workload or have a high stress level. Other factors to consider include your diet, your current fitness level, how often you exercise, and even your hobbies. The bottom line is that some people might only require a chiropractic adjustment every few months. Other people might want to schedule multiple visits per month to make sure the adjustments don't wear off.
