Nothing ruins your day quite like being in a car accident.

If you’re a skier, you probably know what you have to do to prepare for a skiing trip.
Pack your skis and boots.
Pack your ski jacket, hat and goggles.
Visit your chiropractor.

More and more skiers are discovering the benefits of chiropractics for everything from staying limber to back injury relief.

You don't want to go out skiing with equipment that hasn't been well-maintained.
Your skis, boots, pole or snowboard should all be functioning at their peak so you know that you can hit the slopes safely.
One piece of equipment always seems to get neglected, though—your body.
While most people know you should be exercising regularly for about six weeks before you start skiing, the idea that you should take your body into a chiropractor for a regular check-up gets overlooked much too often.
After all, if you’re like many people today, you probably spent a great deal of time sitting in a chair working.
This is an ideal lifestyle for some, better than the backbreaking manual labour jobs that can wreak havoc on your spine, but sitting can do just as much damage.

In all the excitement around a new pregnancy, people often focus on the new baby coming.
That’s all great, but the one part of pregnancy that often seems to get glossed over is the toll it takes on a woman's body.
Morning sickness is just the beginning.
Pregnant women also have to deal with back pain, pelvic pain, high blood pressure, being short of breath, nausea, vomiting and swollen ankles.
It doesn't exactly sound like fun.

If you feel like you're not sleeping well, you're not alone.
Many people are not getting the sleep they need, and that's not good - not sleeping well has a direct effect on your health beyond just being tired.
It can also affect the quality of your life in other ways, affecting your productivity, your emotional balance, your energy during the daytime and even your weight.
Fortunately, healthcare clinics like our naturopathic medicine clinic have been able to develop some strategies and techniques that can improve your nightly trip to dreamland.
What does “get more light” mean?
Simply – enjoy more sunshine!
That might seem simple, but unfortunately it’s not.
Too many smartphones, tablets and other computers have joined forces with fluorescent lights and sedentary indoor jobs to keep our lighting inadequate.
On top of that, we Canadians live in a climate where the sun sets incredibly early in the winter.
On the shortest day of the year last year – December 21st – the sun set at 4:44 pm, and rose at 7:48 am.
So if you’re working an 8-4 or a 9-5 shift at work, you’re almost guaranteed to miss every bit of sunshine the day has to offer.
That's not a good thing—your brain secretes more melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate you sleep-wake cycle, when it's dark.
This stuff makes you sleepy and less alert – which is great when you’re trying to fall asleep, but not so much when you’re at work and trying to concentrate.
So take some steps to get more sunlight in your life.
Have breakfast by a sunny window.
If you have a break time at work, spend it outside walking.
You can also pick up a light therapy box if the other strategies fail to pay off.
These simulate sunshine and can be helpful during short winter days.
One of the most important strategies for sleeping better is to get in sync with your body's circadian rhythm.
Following this rhythm will leave you feeling more refreshed and energized than if you try to deviate from them, even if it's just by an hour or two.
First, do your best to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day.
This will adjust your body to start feeling tired at the appropriate time.
It will also get your body to start feeling more awake at the time you're supposed to wake up.
Make sure to keep this schedule at all times, even on the weekends.
Yes, you're going to give up the luxury of sleeping in late.
However, the extra alertness you receive because of your improved circadian rhythm will make up for it.
Another way to keep synced to your circadian rhythm is to limit your nap time.
Limit your naps to no more than 20 minutes in the afternoon, and avoid the temptation to lie down and sleep after dinner.
Naps in the evening can lead to you not feeling tired when your bedtime arrives, making you more likely to stay up.

According to studies, people who exercise regularly feel less sleepy during the day compared to people who do not.
People who exercise also reportedly sleep better at night.
That seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it?
After all, the more rest your body gets, the more restful your sleep will be, right?
Turns out that’s not the case.
The more you exercise, the more tired your body becomes, and the more rejuvenating your sleep ends up being.
Of course, no one's expecting you to train like Arnold Schwarzenegger if your hardest exercise recently has been lifting the TV remote.
Even walking for 10 minutes a day has been shown to improve sleep quality.
Finally, make sure you watch what you eat.
Caffeine and Nicotine are both stimulants that can disrupt your sleep.
You may know about caffeine's reputation as wake-up chemical.
But did you know, though, that it can cause sleep problems for up to twelve hours after you've had some?
Nicotine, on the other hand, is mostly available from tobacco products, which carry even more health problems.
You should also stay away from alcohol before bedtime, since it has the same effect as caffeine and nicotine.
Finally, make sure you eat healthy foods.
White bread, white pasta and white rice all have refined carbohydrates that can randomly make you awake at night.
Instead, try leafy green vegetables and whole grains.
Make sure you avoid having a big meal or snack before bedtime, and schedule your bedtime for at least two hours after you've eaten dinner.
Getting more and better sleep can seem impossible, especially if you've gone years without.
However, by following these strategies you'll be well on your way to waking up refreshed every morning.

Out of all the different kinds of aches, headaches and neck tension have to be among the worst.
They can range from the mildly annoying to the utterly debilitating, and once they have arrived it seems the only way to treat them is with painkillers and rest until the pain subsides enough that you can get on with your day.
While chiropractic adjustments have proven particularly effective at treating headaches and neck tension, there are still some everyday actions you can take that will not just alleviate the pain, but help you avoid it altogether.
It goes without saying that the best headache or neck pain is the kind you avoid in the first place.
If you're susceptible to headaches, the best thing you can do is figure out what might be causing them.
Many times, you can significantly reduce how frequently you get headaches if you just make one or two changes to your schedule.
One of the biggest reasons for headaches and neck pains at work is sitting all day.
It's not a task our bodies were designed to do.
So one of the first steps in any headache and neck tension prevention plan is to take frequent breaks in order to stretch and walk around.
You'll also want to look at your workstation.
The best kind of workstation is not only ergonomically correct, but also allows you to stand or sit depending on your body's needs.
This reduces the stress you place on your body, and also helps keep you from being sedentary.
Another piece of advice is to keep yourself hydrated.
Dehydration can cause headaches that can be as powerful as a migraine, so make sure to drink lots of water throughout the day.
If you suffer from stress headaches, you could benefit from breathing exercises.
Breathing exercises have been shown to help reduce stress, improve sleep and help people relax more.
Several breathing exercises exist, from deep breathing to relaxing breaths.
You can find several of them on the Internet.
You might even find them on some higher-grade fitness tracking bands.
Exploring meditation might also be beneficial.
Meditation not only provides the benefits of breathing exercises, but can also help increase mindfulness, the ability to focus your attention on the present.
Experiment with different types of breathing exercises and meditation tracks until you find the ones that work best for you.

Did you know fruits and vegetables have anti-inflammatory properties?
Since inflammations are responsible for multiple types of headaches, eating more salads, fruits and other plant-based foods can potentially reduce your headaches.
Eating more plant-based foods can also help lower blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease, as well as some forms of cancer!
Exercise gets you moving. It also releases endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.
Studies have shown that with regular exercise, people can reduce the number of headaches they get.
Of course, exercise has many other health benefits as well.
If you haven't exercised in a while, start with something slow, like walking for 10-15 minutes.
If you already exercise regularly, try to increase the length of your exercise sessions.
Certain types of headaches, called cervicogenic headaches, are headaches that come from another part of your body altogether, usually your spine or neck, commonly associated with stress.
These types of headaches respond particularly well to chiropractic treatment, especially from a chiropractor who practices ART (active release technique).

When you go to a chiropractor, you might not know what to expect.
What are "chiropractic adjustments?"
How many of them does a patient usually need?
Are they permanent fixes or will I have to keep getting them again and again?
These are all very good questions.
Read on to find the answers.
In the world of chiropractic, an adjustment is just that—an adjustment a chiropractor makes to vertebrae of the spine.
These vertebrae are in sub-optimal positions along the spine, and the result is that the muscles can feel in pain, stiff, or just uncomfortable.
A chiropractor will push, shove and essentially force the wayward vertebra back into place.
These adjustments have also been recognized as being effective by the mainstream medical establishment.
The short answer is “it depends.”
When you go to see a chiropractor, he or she will ask you a lot of questions about your pain or discomfort.
They'll want to know whether this is a new injury or one you've had for a while and whether the injury is chronic or not.
You can also expect your chiropractor to look at your overall health and examine your health history for any diseases which can cause complications in the treatment, like diabetes or scoliosis.
Finally, the number of adjustments you need will depend on the technique the chiropractor uses.
They might just treat the symptoms to help alleviate the pain so you can heal on your own, which most patients prefer.
However, they might want to do a corrective set of adjustments, which can take longer.
After all these factors have been evaluated, your chiropractor will tell you how many adjustments you need.
While even providing a range is impossible, it's safe to say that curing minor discomfort and one-time injuries will require fewer adjustments than treating chronic pain or severe muscle injuries.

Unfortunately, the answer is still "it depends."
How long adjustments last depends on all the factors listed previously.
However, you also need to take into consideration how closely a patient follows the treatment plan and how often they do the stretches and exercises their chiropractor recommends.
Chiropractic adjustments may also not last as long for people who have a heavy workload or have a high stress level.
Other factors to consider include your diet, your current fitness level, how often you exercise, and even your hobbies.
The bottom line is that some people might only require a chiropractic adjustment every few months.
Other people might want to schedule multiple visits per month to make sure the adjustments don't wear off.

And part of that means being aware of the modern challenges people face when it comes to neck and back pain.
In this article, Dr. Brad talks about the risks of “text neck”, and how you can avoid it.
It’s the 21st century, and we all have a pile of electronic devices these days. Even some Amish groups are using cell phones!
Smart phones give us unfettered access to the internet and all the information on it every moment of the day, which means a disagreement with your pals over who won the Hart Memorial Trophy in the 2013-14 season is much easier to solve (it’s Sidney Crosby, by the way).
And as the internet grows, so does our fascination with these devices.
People are spending more and more time looking at their screens even as they walk from place to place.
And while that might help you cram before a test, respond to emails more quickly, or keep you amused as you catch a few Pokemon on your daily stroll, it can have disastrous effects on your neck and spine.
The average human head weighs about ten pounds on average.
To put this in perspective, grab a ten pound bag of rice next time you’re in the grocery store – that’s how much your head weighs.
All that weight is sitting on your neck and spine all day.
Of course, they’re designed to support that weight, and they do a pretty good job overall – when your head is on top of them.
But when your head hangs forward, like when you’re using a phone or tablet, it can cause some issues.
The ideal posture is where your ears are in line with your neck and shoulders.
This is where your body can best diffuse the weight of your head along your spine.
But if your head hangs forward, you’re pulling your spine forward.
Even a few inches can put a significant amount of weight on the spine. T
hat’s why you can feel it all the way down your spine when you stretch your neck all the way forward during a yoga or Pilates practice, for example.
At that point, the ten pound weight in your noggin creates a much larger amount of force on your spine – up to sixty pounds of force.
To put that in perspective, pick up a bag of six bowling balls, or the nearest willing eight year old.
That’s how much force is being exerted on your neck as it hangs forward.
And when you stretch your neck occasionally, that’s fine.
Healthy, even. But if you maintain this position for long periods throughout the day – like the several hours you spend using your cell phone or tablet – it can cause some significant damage.
These days, people are calling it “text neck”. But that’s just a fancy name for a repetitive strain injury from holding your head forward all day.
If you use a cell phone or tablet, you’re at risk of text neck.
And since that covers just about all of us, it’s becoming more and more of an issue in today’s society.
If you’re experiencing any of the following, you may be suffering from text neck:
• Chronic headaches
• Tension in your jaw
• Poor posture
• Curvature of the spine
• Chronic pain in your neck, shoulders, or upper back
• Difficulty focusing
But what can you do about it?

If the above doesn’t apply to you, but you use a cell phone, follow these tips to avoid developing text neck.
The key here is to keep your head as much as possible in a neutral position, where your ears and your shoulders are in line.
There are a few different ways to do this.
First, hold your phone at eye level, or at least at the point where you can look down with your eyes instead of your head.
Also, pay attention to your posture.
It’s easy to start slouching, especially if you spend a lot of time seated at a desk.
To accomplish a good posture, imagine someone is pulling you up by an invisible thread attached to the top of your head.
Finally, you may want to consider using your phone less.
I know that’s hard, but the less you use your phone the less like you’ll be to fall back into the patterns of slouching and poor posture that cause you back and neck pain.
